Meter connectivity

Modbus TCP energy monitoring software

Read your power meters, keep the history, and turn the readings into useful reports. MeterSight connects to compatible Modbus TCP meters with presets or custom register maps.

Read-only meter access in Bronze, Silver and Gold.

From registers to readings

Use the measurements already in your meters

A meter's register map describes where its measurements are stored and how to interpret them. MeterSight uses that map to read energy and electrical values over Modbus TCP.

Bronze collects cumulative kWh for energy accounting. Silver and Gold add live voltage, current, power, power factor, frequency and continuous trending. Harmonics and other measurements depend on what the connected meter exposes.

The poller reads holding and input registers using function codes 03 and 04. It does not write settings or control commands to the meter.

Connection options

Ethernet meters and serial meters

The connection path depends on how your meters communicate. MeterSight polls Modbus TCP in both cases.

Meters with Modbus TCP

Connect using the meter's network address and unit ID. Choose a matching preset or configure a custom map, then select the read interval.

RS-485 Modbus RTU meters

Use a suitable Modbus TCP-to-RTU gateway. The gateway connects the serial devices to the TCP network, with each meter addressed through its unit ID.

Cloud and on-premises deployments use the same package features. The connection from your meter network to the chosen deployment needs to be planned for your site; we can help confirm that path.

Meter mapping

Start with a preset. Check it against your meter.

MeterSight includes presets for Schneider PowerLogic PM8000, ION9000 and PM5500, Socomec DIRIS A-200, MCM-16 and MCM-48, and Powerside PQube 3.

Preset validation and measurement coverage vary by model. The supported meters table lists the map status and available measurements, including where lab validation is recommended.

For another compatible meter, a custom map defines the holding or input registers, data types and scaling. Confirm the decoded readings against the meter before relying on them in reports.

Live values and trends

Silver and Gold add live electrical readings, continuous trends, harmonics, voltage THD events and scheduled email reports.

Events and waveforms

Gold adds alarms, graphics, ITIC analysis and COMTRADE viewing. Automatic waveform retrieval from PM8000 and ION9000 uses SFTP separately from Modbus polling.

Modbus monitoring questions

Can MeterSight read a meter without a built-in preset?
Yes, if its required measurements are available through compatible Modbus TCP registers. Use the manufacturer's register map to define the addresses, data types and scaling in Setup. Send us the model and firmware details if you need help confirming compatibility.
Can MeterSight connect directly to an RS-485 serial meter?
MeterSight polls Modbus TCP. A Modbus RTU meter on RS-485 needs a suitable Modbus TCP-to-RTU gateway between the serial network and MeterSight.
Does a Modbus connection provide waveform recordings?
Not by itself. Modbus polling reads the mapped measurements. In Gold, automatic COMTRADE retrieval from supported PM8000 and ION9000 meters uses a separate SFTP connection, and the meter must provide the recordings.
Can MeterSight change settings on a power meter?
No. The meter poller uses read-only function codes 03 and 04. Meter configuration and control remain outside MeterSight's polling workflow.

Check your meters before choosing a package
